The Miracle Fruit Plant, sometimes known as Miraculous Berry, (Synsepalum dulcificum) is a plant first documented by an explorer named Des Marchais during his 1725 excursion to its native West Africa.
Although the berry itself is not sweet, it contains an active glycoprotein molecule, with some trailing carbohydrate chains, called miraculin. When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, this molecule binds to the tongue's taste buds, causing changes to gustation - in particular bitter and sour foods (such as lemons and limes) consumed later to taste sweet. This effect lasts up to two hours.

London's premier Japanese restaurant the Saki Food Emporium has become the first restaurant in the UK to offer Miracle Fruit on its menu. Diners may be tempted by the dessert which promises a full taste trip experience, the saki chefs also have plans for a full three course meal based around Miracle Fruit. The BBC last night broadcast a show on the history of Miracle Fruit - here is the accompanying article. As a result we have been inundated with orders, the last 24 hours has seen more sales than the whole of the year so far! Orders are suffering from delays of around two weeks but we are working hard to clear the backlog as soon as possible.
